How to Buy Christmas Lights

Decision 5: clips

Christmas Light Clips by Roof and Gutter Type

The right clip holds each socket straight, faces the bulb the same way, and comes off in January without damaging shingles or gutters. The wrong one is the reason rooflines look crooked.

Start with what you are attaching to

Clips are chosen by surface, not by bulb color or brand. Walk the house and note each surface the lights will follow: shingle edges, gutter lips, ridge caps, tile, metal fascia or ground. Then match each section to a clip from the table below. Plan one clip per socket.

O clips

An O clip is a ring that holds the C9 socket, with a tab that slides onto the edge of a shingle or hooks over a gutter lip. It is the workhorse clip for roofline C9 installs because it keeps every bulb pointing the same direction. The O clip is offered in white and black so it can disappear against white gutters or dark shingles. For larger jobs the 1,000 clip case is $228.00, which is $0.23 per clip.

All-in-one clips

All-in-one clips are designed to attach to either shingles or gutters, and they hold both C9 and C7 sockets as well as some other light types. They are a practical choice when a single house has both a gutter line and a shingle rake, since one clip covers both. The 3,000 clip case is listed at $549.00, or $0.18 per clip.

Shingle tabs

Shingle tabs slide up under the shingle edge and hold the wire along the drip edge, keeping sockets tight to the roof. They are common on rakes (the sloped edges of a gable) where there is no gutter to hook. Available in white and black; the 1,000 tab case is $219.00.

Ridge clips

Ridge lines are the peaks of the roof, where two slopes meet. A ridge clip straddles the ridge cap so the bulb stands upright along the top of the roof. Ridge lighting outlines the full shape of a house from the street and is often done in a contrasting white or color from the eaves below.

Tile and extended fascia clips

Clay and concrete tile roofs cannot take a shingle clip, and some fascia boards stand too far out for a standard gutter hook. The tile and extended fascia clip is made for these cases, holding C9 or C7 sockets on tile edges and deeper fascia profiles.

Magnet clips

Magnet clips attach to steel gutters, metal fascia, metal roofs and commercial storefront frames without fasteners or adhesive. They cost more per clip than plastic clips but install quickly and leave no marks. Note that aluminum gutters are not magnetic; check with a magnet before ordering. For metal surfaces, the magnetic socket spool is an alternative that builds the magnet into each socket.

Light stakes

Stakes hold a C9 or C7 socket upright in the ground to line walkways, driveways and garden beds. They are typically spaced every one to two feet. The 250 stake case is listed at $199.95.

Installation tips

  • Clip the wire before adding bulbs, so you can see the line and adjust it straight.
  • Keep every socket facing the same direction; consistency matters more than the angle chosen.
  • Never staple or nail light wire. Fasteners pierce insulation and damage roofing.
  • Buy a few more clips than sockets. Clips drop off ladders and occasionally break in the cold.

Frequently asked questions

What clips should I use to hang lights on gutters?

O clips and all-in-one clips both hook over the lip of a standard gutter. On steel gutters, magnet clips attach without hooking. Aluminum gutters are not magnetic.

How do I hang C9 lights on a roof without gutters?

Use shingle tabs or O clips that slide onto the shingle edge along the rake or eave. On tile roofs, use a tile clip.

How many clips do I need?

One clip per socket, plus a few spares. At 12 inch spacing that is about 100 clips per 100 feet; at 15 inch spacing about 80.
